White Widow is one of the founding names of the international seed catalogue. It is associated with a hybrid built on South American and Indian material, which became known in the coffeeshops and seed banks of the Netherlands during the nineties and which gave its name to a whole family of “white” strains, called that for the density of trichomes covering their flowers. That crystalline blanket is still its hallmark.

The data sheet of this version declares a cross of White Widow × Ruderalis. Cannabis ruderalis is the short-cycle subspecies adapted to high latitudes, and its contribution is what makes the strain autoflowering. In a photoperiod plant flowering starts when the photoperiod changes; here the move from growth to flowering depends on the age of the plant and not on the photoperiod.

What makes this strain recognisable

The profile the data sheet declares starts in an intense floral, a register that is uncommon in the catalogue: it is not sweet, nor fruity, nor lactic. Behind it come the bittersweet nuances, and the whole rests on an earthy and woody background that gives it body. It is a layered aroma, more complex than single-note profiles.

In structure it is a small to medium plant, between 70 and 110 cm, with a marked main cola and side branches that gain width as the plant develops. Once well into flowering it can show pink and purple tones, a shift that depends on the environment and on the phenotype.

The visual trait that identifies it best is the coverage of crystals over the flowers, the detail that gives the whole “white” family its name. As in any seed population there is variation between phenotypes: these traits describe the average of the selection, not one specific plant.

How it fits within the catalogue

• White Widow feminized: the photoperiod version of the same line. Same lineage and same profile, but it goes into flowering when the photoperiod changes and not with age. It is the direct comparison between the two families.
• Northern Lights Auto: another compact autoflowering strain, but with an earthy and pine profile instead of floral, and with 16–21% declared THC against the 15–20% of this one.
• AK-74 Auto: it shares the declared THC range (15–20%), but with a fresh, fruity register next to the floral of White Widow Auto.

About the large formats

Besides the 6-seed pack, White Widow Auto is offered in packs of 100 and 1,000 seeds. They are single-strain packs, with no mixes: all the seeds come from the same selection of mother plants as the small format, so what changes is the quantity and not the genetic material.

The difference is in the price per seed, which drops from €3.33 in the small format to €2.40 in the 100-seed pack and to €1.20 in the 1,000-seed one. The whole catalogue in these formats is in bulk seeds.

Frequently asked questions about White Widow Auto

How does it differ from White Widow feminized?

In what triggers flowering. The feminized one is photoperiod and changes phase when the photoperiod changes. White Widow Auto carries ruderalis in its cross, so the change depends on the age of the plant. The White Widow lineage and the floral profile are common to both.

Does it always develop pink and purple tones?

No. The data sheet describes that it can do so when the plant is already well into flowering. It is a trait conditioned by the environment and by the phenotype, not a guaranteed characteristic of every seed.

What does the declared THC of 15–20% mean?

It is the range that the bank declares for its parent lines, not a measurement of each seed. It serves to place the strain against others in the catalogue and to compare them with each other.
