Parent lines and genetic origin

Critical is one of the most widespread names in the international seed catalogue. It is associated with a highly productive hybrid built on Skunk and Afghan material, which established itself in European banks and has since given rise to a whole family of selections and variants, each bank with its own. The sweet and earthy touch and the high productivity are the marks by which it is usually recognised.

The data sheet for this version declares a cross of Critical Bilbo × AK-74 × Ruderalis. To the Critical base is added the AK-74 lineage, which contributes the fruity component, and a line of Cannabis ruderalis, the short-cycle subspecies adapted to high latitudes. That third component is what makes the strain autoflowering: in a photoperiod plant flowering starts when the photoperiod changes, whereas here the move from growth to flowering depends on the age of the plant.

Critical Plus Auto was one of the first autoflowering strains we brought to market and it is still one of the best sellers in this family. The Trikoma version comes from our own mother plants selected and maintained at our bank in Barcelona: we work on our own parent lines and we do not distribute third-party genetic material.

What makes this strain recognisable

It is one of the most composite profiles in the catalogue. The data sheet describes it as sugary, fruity and earthy, with notes of hashish: three registers that do not usually coexist. The sweetness opens, the fruit appears halfway up and the earthy background with that resinous touch of hashish is what closes. On the palate, the declared note is of nuts and fruit, somewhat drier and with less sugar than the aroma anticipates.

In structure it is a short plant that rarely exceeds 90 cm, with a compact bearing that concentrates production in a small volume. That contained bearing, together with the density of flowers it gathers in so little space, is what defines it against the larger autoflowering strains in the range.

As in any seed population there is variation between phenotypes: these traits describe the average of the selection, not one particular specimen.

How it fits within the catalogue

• Critical Plus feminized: the photoperiod version of the same line. Same Critical lineage, but it enters flowering when the photoperiod changes and not by age. It is the direct comparison between the two families.
• AK-74 Auto: it shares the AK-74 component of the cross, but with a fresh and fruity profile without the earthy background or the hashish notes of Critical Plus Auto.
• Total Cheese Auto: the other autoflowering strain with Critical in its genetics, here crossed with Cheese, with a dairy profile and 13–18% declared THC against this one’s 16–21%.

About the large formats

Besides the 6-seed pack, Critical Plus Auto is offered in packs of 100 and 1,000 seeds. They are single-strain packs, with no mixes: all the seeds come from the same selection of mother plants as the small format, so what changes is the quantity and not the genetic material.

The difference is in the price per seed, which drops from €3.33 in the small format to €2.40 in the 100-seed pack and to €1.20 in the 1,000-seed pack. The whole catalogue in these formats is in bulk seeds.

How does it differ from Critical Plus feminized?

In what triggers flowering. The feminized one is photoperiod and changes phase when the photoperiod changes. Critical Plus Auto carries ruderalis in its cross, so the change depends on the age of the plant.

Why does its genetics include AK-74?

Because the declared cross is not only Critical: the data sheet records Critical Bilbo × AK-74 × Ruderalis. The AK-74 lineage is what explains the fruity component of the profile, alongside the earthy background of the Critical base.

What does the declared THC of 16–21% mean?

It is the range the bank declares for its parent lines, not a measurement of each seed. It serves to place the strain against others in the catalogue and compare them with one another.
