Parent lines and genetic origin

The name Critical identifies one of the most widespread indica families in the European catalogue. It arose from work with Skunk and Afghan lines and became popular in the nineties because it offered a shorter flowering cycle than the sativas that dominated at the time. Today numerous versions circulate under that name, each with its own history.

This page starts from Trikoma Seeds’ Critical Plus, whose documented cross is Critical Bilbo × AK-47: the indica base and the short cycle come from the Critical Bilbo side, and the spicy edge from the AK-47 side. The fast version is built on that base. A fast version is a photoperiod feminized strain: it enters flowering when the light cycle changes, just like a conventional feminized one. What sets it apart is that its ancestry contains a contribution of ruderalis, the subspecies that gives autoflowering strains their autoflowering trait.

That contribution is introduced and then backcrossed towards the photoperiod line, so that the trait which shortens flowering is kept but the autoflowering is lost. A fast does not flower by itself after a few weeks, as an auto does, nor does it drag out the full cycle of the feminized one: here the declared range is 49 to 56 days, against the 56–63 days of indoor flowering of the feminized one.

About the large formats

The 100 and 1,000 seed packs are of a single strain. They are not mixes or assorted batches: they contain only Critical Plus Fast and come from exactly the same selection of mother plants as the small pack.

What changes is the price per seed: in the small pack it works out at €3.33, in the 100-seed pack it drops to €2.40 and in the 1,000-seed pack it stays at €1.20. The rest of the large formats are in bulk seeds.

Frequently asked questions about Critical Plus Fast

What is the difference between a fast version, a feminized and an autoflowering strain?

All three are feminized, but they do not behave the same. The classic feminized one is photoperiod: it flowers when the light cycle changes. The autoflowering one carries ruderalis in its cross and flowers by age, without depending on the photoperiod. The fast version is photoperiod like the feminized one, but it has some ruderalis in its ancestry, just enough to shorten flowering without becoming automatic.

Why does it declare less THC than Critical Plus feminized?

This version starts from the same genetic base, but the shortening of the cycle is reflected in a somewhat lower declared range: 19–24% against the 22–27% of Critical Plus feminized. Both are catalogue ranges referring to the parent lines, not measurements of each seed.
