Some varieties appear twice in the catalog: the original and its fast version. At first glance they look like the same genetics under another name, and the usual question is whether the difference is worth it. The answer lies in the product page data, and an example from our own catalog makes it clear.
What a fast version is
A fast version is a photoperiod variety into whose ancestry some ruderalis genetics has been introduced, but without turning it into an autoflowering strain. It still depends on the photoperiod, just like the original, but its flowering phase is shorter.
It’s a middle ground between the two large families in the catalog:
- Photoperiod feminized: long flowering, controlled by the photoperiod.
- Fast version: photoperiod-dependent, shortened flowering.
- Autoflowering: doesn’t depend on the photoperiod, fixed full cycle.
The example: AK-74 vs AK74 Fast
Both start from the same cross, AK-47 × White Widow. This is what each product page declares:
- AK-74 feminized: 40/60 genotype, declared THC 24–29%, indoor flowering of 60 to 65 days.
- AK74 Fast: declared THC 21–26%, flowering of 53 to 57 days.
The difference in flowering is roughly one week. It isn’t a transformation: it’s the same genetic family with a shortened cycle.
Why the declared THC isn’t the same
In our catalog, fast versions declare a range slightly below that of their original variety, at both the top and the bottom end. In this case, 21–26% versus 24–29%. It’s worth understanding what that means and what it doesn’t.
Declared THC is catalog data: the range the seed bank attributes to the line based on its parents and the selection carried out on it. It isn’t a lab measurement of each seed, nor a guarantee of results. Two specimens of the same variety can fall at different ends of the range depending on phenotype and conditions.
The fact that the two product pages declare different ranges shows that they are different selections within the same family. The ruderalis contribution that shortens the cycle is also what shifts the range slightly downward. That’s why on all our product pages the figure appears as a range and is labeled as catalog data.
Which fast versions are in the catalog
The catalog currently includes six fast versions, with declared flowering times ranging from 40 to 57 days. You can see them all in Fast Versions.
Some of them, such as AK74 Fast, have a classic feminized equivalent in the catalog, so they can be compared page by page. Others only exist in the fast version.
How to choose between them
The decision usually comes down to two questions:
- Are you interested in the original genetics or the short cycle? If what you’re after is the documented classic line, the feminized strain is the reference. If cycle length is the criterion, the fast version shortens it.
- Are you going to compare the data? Always look at genotype, declared THC range and flowering days together. A single isolated figure says little.
If you want to understand the rest of the data on a product page, we explain it in how to read the genotype and in the difference between the three families.
