Cannabis took off in Spain in the late nineties, with the country’s first group of grow shops opening in 1998. Since then, Spain has gone on to become the world’s largest producer of feminized cannabis seeds — almost thirty years of history. It’s worth looking back at that history, because it explains something very specific: why a Spanish seed bank like Trikoma Seeds can sell seeds of the same quality at a lower price than the pioneering banks.
The first grow shops and the arrival of Dutch genetics
Spain’s first group of grow shops opened its doors in 1998, bringing home-growing culture into the country in full force. In those years the market looked almost entirely to the Netherlands: it was the Dutch seed banks — Sensi Seeds, Dutch Passion, Paradise Seeds, Serious Seeds, among others — that set the reference genetics, especially in regular seeds.
Dutch Passion and the first feminized seeds: pioneers, but expensive
Dutch Passion was the first Dutch bank to develop feminized seeds. They were pioneers, without doubt, but the technique of the time still had problems: it was common for a high percentage of hermaphrodite plants to appear. On top of that came the price: these were very expensive seeds, out of reach for most budgets. Today, though, their feminized seeds are high quality, with little to no hermaphroditism. The same can be said of Sensi Seeds, Paradise Seeds and Serious Seeds: they remain benchmark banks in the industry.
2005: the generation of Spanish seed banks that changed the rules
From 2005 onwards, the first Spanish feminized-seed banks began to appear — among them Dinafem, Sweet Seeds and Pyramid Seeds — and they changed the approach in two ways. First, on quality and price: they entered the market with feminized seeds on par with the Dutch ones but far more affordable. Second, on format: instead of the 10- and 15-seed packs sold by the pioneering banks, they introduced small packs of 3 and 5 seeds, much more accessible for home growers.
That new generation didn’t start from scratch: it built on the genetic bases and mother plants of the pioneering Dutch banks to develop its own lines.
Spain, today the world’s largest producer of feminized seeds
From then until now, Spain has become the world’s largest producer of feminized cannabis seeds. Spanish seed banks supply growers and shops all over the world, always working with their own genetics: selecting, crossing and stabilizing their own varieties instead of reselling third-party batches.
Why buying direct from the seed bank costs less
Here’s the part that really matters when you’re buying: when you buy from a bank that breeds its own genetics — like Trikoma Seeds — you’re buying directly from the producer, with no middlemen. That, not quality, is what explains why our seeds are somewhat cheaper than those of other banks with several layers of distribution: the price doesn’t carry the margins of a resale chain.
In our case, in-house genetics production started in 2005 — the same years the new Spanish generation was born — initially breeding for other brands in the sector. Building on that experience, in 2009 we took the step of selling under our own brand: that’s how Trikoma Seeds was born. We’re still working with our own genetics in Barcelona today, across feminized, autoflowering, fast versions and CBD seeds.
